I purchased the pro version hoping that I could add a ACF image field into a grid item layout but when I enter a meta key I am returned the image id.

Welcome to our forum.
I have created documentation for using ACF meta field via shrotcode on layout editor much easier to work, you will jusy need to create a shrotcode and add the code under theme functions.php file and you can use that shortcode on layout editor.
