I haven't been able to get a grid to show ONLY thumbnail (as link). When I specify that in the layout editor, it shows two - one thumbnail above the other.

if you already display thumbnail troguh the option "Media source" , there is alread an option "Featured Image linked to post", please see the screenshot.

you don't need to add the thumbnail in layout editor.

Never mind, I got it by adding an element in the layout editor and setting the css to display: none. Thanks for the help!
Thank you for that. I have styled the featured image grid so there is no space between images, etc. So if I uncheck the option above and only show the "thumbnail with link" in the layout editor, I get the wrong thumbnail that isn't carefully styled to have no space, etc.
If I check the option, which shows the thumbnail the way I want, it won't let me remove everything else. I don't want title, excerpt or anything – ONLY the "featured image linked to post" to be yes.
Is there a way to let it do that? ONLY show "featured image linked to post" and nothing else?

you can remove each element by click on cross icon on layout editor.
