I am using the free version and even if I go to query and select the product category for which i want the slider, it does not change the products in the slide to that specific category.

Welcome to PickPlugins.
First, ensure you've installed our latest version of the product slider plugin. The newest version is 1.13.44
Then, Create a brand new slider for testing purposes. Go to WCPS => Add New

Now under Query product, set a Max number of product to -1.
And under product taxonomy & terms, set your category and publish your wcps slider.
