I was wondering if there was a way to make the post you select in the grid open in the same window as opposed to creating another tab?

Welcome to our forum.
You need to go layout editor and see there is an option link target for title with link and read more link item, please see the screenshot, if you don't see the link target option please remove existing and add it again.
